A Glimpse into Salem’s History and Geography

Salem’s historical journey begins in the 3rd century BC with the introduction of Jainism and Buddhism. In 1987, archaeologists uncovered evidence of a thriving society around the start of the Christian era. Nature’s lap – Muttal

The Muttal Village is situated about 15km away from Attur on the Attur-Mullaivadi road. The waterfalls are located in a spot called Aaniavari in the Forest area. They are about 3km away from the village.

The heavy flow of water in the Aanaivari waterfalls attracts many tourists. It is located in Muttal village in Attur forest range. The special arrangements by the Forest Department have also drawn tourists from across the Western districts.

The Forest Department has developed the waterfalls into a tourist spot. They are situated in a highly picturesque location. The department has made efforts to keep the waterfalls and the surrounding areas.

The Kalvarayan Hills experience rain fall during both the South West and North East Monsoon. The Forest Department converted this area into a tourist spot. The water flowing from the hills through the falls reaches the local lake in village. The Department has also introduced merry boating facility in the lake, for the advantage of the visitors.

The Forest Department is operating vehicle to allow the tourists to reach the waterfalls from the lake. The precautionary measures has been taken for the tourists by providing Life-Jackets during the boat ride. A fee of Rs.20 for the adults and Rs.10 for the Children is collected for boating.

The Forest Department has constructed rooms on the bank of the lake. They offer these rooms to the tourists at a reasonable rate.

Sangagiri Fort

Sankagiri Fort is a historical fort maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is located 22 km from the city of Erode and 38 km from Salem. Fort was built in the 15th Century by the Vijayanagar Empire. It has 12 fort walls built on and built by the British. The fort served as a British tax storage facility for Kongu Nadu. It was an important military base for Tippu Sultan and later for the British army. This is because only one side of the hill is climbable, as all the others are too steep to climb. This includes a death well and granary. It also features two masjiths and 2 Varadhraja Perumal temples. Additionally, there are former British Army administrative buildings, and cemeteries used by armies stationed at the fort. Dheeran Chinnamalai was hanged by British in this fort.
