In the early 15th century, the region now known as Ramanathapuram district was governed by the Pandya dynasty. This area encompasses the taluks of Tiruvadanai, Paramakudi, Kamuthi, Mudukulathur, Ramanathapuram, and Rameswaram. Briefly, this area also came under the influence of the Chola Kings, particularly when Rajendra Chola claimed it in A.D. 1063.
By A.D. 1520, the Nayaks of the Vijayanagar Empire seized control from the Pandyas, ruling the area for nearly two centuries. During this period, the Marava chieftains, known as Sethupathis, served as local lords under the Pandyan kings. Yet, in the early 18th century, succession disputes within the family led to the fragmentation of Ramanathapuram.
In A.D. 1730, with support from the King of Thanjavur, one chieftain deposed the Sethupathy and declared himself Raja of Sivaganga. As the Nayak rule began to decline, local chieftains gained independence. Chanda Sahib captured Ramanathapuram. By 1741, the region came under the dominion of the Marathas. It later fell under the control of the Nizam in A.D. 1744.
The governance by the Nawabs led to dissatisfaction among local leaders. As a result, they declared the last Nayak as the ruler of Pandiya Mandalam against the Nawab in A.D. 1752. During this time, the Carnatic throne faced contention. Chanda Sahib was supported by the British. Meanwhile, the French backed Mohamed Ali. This rivalry resulted in a series of conflicts in southern India.
