In the 18th century, Coimbatore was under the rule of the Kingdom of Mysore. Hyder Ali led the kingdom at first, and later Tipu Sultan took over. After the British victory over Tipu Sultan in the Anglo-Mysore Wars, Coimbatore became part of the Madras Presidency in 1799. It played a key role in the Second Poligar War against the British, particularly through the efforts of Dheeran Chinnamalai. In 1865, Coimbatore became the capital of the newly formed Coimbatore district. It became a municipality the next year. Sir Robert Stanes served as the first Chairman of the City Council.

Coimbatore underwent rapid industrialization. The textile boom of the 1920s and 1930s especially transformed the city. It became a significant industrial hub. After India’s independence, Coimbatore continued to thrive as an industrial powerhouse and became a corporation in 1981.

Valparai Hill Station

Valparai Hill station is located above 3500 feet from sea level. It is situated on the Anamalai mountain range of the Western Ghats. It is also one of the best tourist places in Tamilnadu. At a distance of 64 km from Pollachi and 102 kms distance from Coimbatore. Valparai Hill station is pollution free heavenly land surrounded with full of tea estates.

It stands majestically with Green Spread Mountains and picturesque forest all around. Travelling between Pollachi to Valparai is itself an exotic experience.

This place has number of tea and coffee estates surrounded by thick forest. The climate of Valparai is most suitable for tea, coffee, cardamom and cincona trees. According to the earlier records, in 1846, Mr. Ramaswamy Mudaliyar started cultivating coffee in his private estate.

Afterwards, in 1864, the Karnatic Coffee Company began their coffee plantation here. They did not make it profitable. Hence, they sold part of their land. In 1890, W. Wintil and Nordan bought a huge part of land in Valparai from the Madras State Government under the British Raj. Wintil deforested the area and established tea and coffee estate.

He was assisted by Carwer Marsh, an experienced planter. Carwer Marsh, owing to his dedication and hard work, later came to be known as the Father of Annamalais. A statue has been erected in Kavarkal Estate, which is dedicated to Carwer Marsh.

Chinna Kallar is one of the places in Valparai which receives the highest rainfall areas in India. There are around 40 steep, hairpin bends to reach Valparai from the plains of Pollachi. The region is also a rich elephant tract and is known to have many leopards. The Valparai range is also the habitat of Nilgiri Tahr.

Tourists can visit the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary. It is one of the most prominent attractions of Valparai. At this sanctuary, travellers can spot the lion-tailed macaque, barking deer, and wild boar. They can also see the Nilgiri and the common langur, among others. Valparai is also a great place for bird watching. The Great Hornbill, the Malabar Pied Hornbill and the Grey Malabar Hornbill are regularly seen here.

Upper Sholayar Dam (15 km) is a fantastic place to visit from Valparai. Important places to visit include Nirar Dam (7 km) and Aliyar Dam (30 km). Monkey Falls (24 km) and Balaji temple (Karimalai -15 km) are also worth visiting. Don’t miss Velankanni Church (Karimalai – 15 km) and Pancha Mugha Vinayagar Koil (Near Sholayar). Besides sightseeing, travellers can also engage in trekking and can also make a visit to the tea estates.

A three day summer festival is organized at Valparai in the month of May to boost tourism. This event includes sessions for children, food festivals, cricket and football matches. Aliyar Dam

Aliyar Dam is a charming location surrounded by Annamali Hills with wonderful natural views. It is located between Pollachi and Valparai.At a distance of 64 Kms from Coimbatore, 24 Kms from Pollachi & 545 Kms from Chennai.

The dam was built across Aliyar River between 1959 and 1969. Its primary purpose is to support irrigation for Pollachi and nearby places. This is for agricultural purposes. The height of the dam is 81 meters. There is a well maintained park built at bottom of the Dam. The view of the Anamalai range around the reservoir is a feast for the eyes. The view of the coconut groves from the top of the dam is amazing. Boating is available here.

It is connected by frequent buses from Pollachi. Most of the people visiting Valparai make a trip Aliyar Dam too.


Kovai Coutralam

Kovai Kutralam is a scenic spot with a gentle waterfall originating on the Siruvani hill ranges. It is located on the western ghat mountain range. This range lies to the west of this city, about 32 kms from Coimbatore. The siruvani dam is just above this water fall and this place is under the control of state forest department. Permission has to be sought from them to visit this Kovai Kutralam Falls. Limited bus service is available from the city and this area is out of bounds after 5 pm. This is the only place near Coimbatore where you find a nice enchanting waterfall.
