The Union Territory of Puducherry consists of former French colonies: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. Puducherry and Karaikal are bordered by Tamil Nadu, Mahe is surrounded by Kerala, and Yanam is adjacent to Andhra Pradesh.

Puducherry was established in 1673 after “La Compagnie française des Indes orientales” secured permission from the Qiladar of Valikondapuram, under the Sultan of Bijapur. French Company official Bellanger settled in Pondicherry on February 4, 1673. In 1674, François Martin was appointed as the first governor, initiating the transformation of Pondicherry from a fishing village to a bustling port town.

Pondicherry became the primary French settlement in India after the French East India Company established a trading post there in 1674. Conflicts among European powers led to the Dutch capturing Pondicherry in 1693, but it was returned to the French by the Treaty of Ryswick in 1699. Between 1720 and 1738, the French expanded their territory to include Mahe, Yanam, and Karaikal. During the Anglo-French wars (1742-1763), control of Puducherry shifted, and in 1761, the British captured it but restored French administration through the Treaty of Paris in 1763.

In 1793, during the French Revolution, the British took control of the area but returned it to the French in 1814. The British allowed the French to keep their settlements in India after gaining control in the late 1850s.
