Formed in 1996 after its separation from Madurai District, Theni became an independent district as per G.O.Ms.No.679. The creation of the district led to the establishment of the Uthamapalayam Revenue Division. New taluks in Theni and Bodinaickanur were established from January 1, 1997. Theni Municipal Town, initially a firka headquarters, was upgraded to the district and taluk headquarters. It evolved into a commercial hub renowned for its large weekly market every Sunday.
Theni attracts tourists with its natural beauty. Key attractions include the Vaigai Dam, Kumbakarai Falls in Periyakulam Taluk, and the scenic Suruli Falls in Uthamapalayam Taluk. Religious sites like the Gowmariamman Temple in Veerapandi and the Saneeswara Bahavan Temple in Kuchanur also attract many devotees. Another significant attraction is the Kannagi Temple.
