History and Geography of Namakkal
Namakkal shares a rich historical connection with the Salem District, as both regions have experienced the same historical shifts. The district saw power struggles between the Cholas, Cheras, and Pandiyas. Then the Hoysalas emerged as rulers and remained in power until the 14th century. After them, the Vijayanagar Empire held sway until 1565, after which the Madurai Nayakas took control in 1623.
It is believed that Ramachandra Nayaka, one of Thirumalai Nayak’s lieutenants, constructed the iconic Namakkal Fort. Around 1625, the region experienced several changes of power. It went from the Bijapur and Golconda Muslim Sultans to the Mysore kings. Eventually, it came under the control of the Marathas. By the mid-18th century, Hyder Ali rose to power. He engaged in a fierce struggle for control against the British. This struggle was later continued by his son Tipu Sultan.
Namakkal was first under the rule of the Atikula King Gunasila. Later, it came under the Cholas during the 9th century. It eventually passed to the Vijayanagar Empire, until Hyder Ali’s reign in 1768, when the British finally took control.

Namakkal Anjaneyar temple is located in Namakkal, a town in Namakkal district. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Hanuman. It is constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture. The legend of the temple is linked to Narasimha, an avatar of Hindu god Vishnu appearing for Hanuman and Lakshmi. The image of Anjaneyar is 18 ft (5.5 m) tall, making it one of the tallest images of Hanuman in India. The Agamam is followed by “Sri Vaikhanasam”.
The temple has a pillared hall leading to the sanctum. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Tiruchengode is 35 km from Namakkal. It is one of the seven Sivasthalams in Kongunadu. The Arthanareeswarar Temple is located on a hill. The presiding deity is depicted as half-male and half-female, vertically to represent Shiva and Parvati worshipped as one form. It is considered one of the oldest temples in this region.

Jedarpalayam Dam is located in Kabilarmalai Panchayat Union of Namakkal District. It is located about 36 kms from Namakkal. The dam is constructed across the River Cauvery where tourists flock in large numbers during festival season and on weekends. This Dam is having a water storage area for boating. Six fibre boats are available for boating. The children’s parks with play materials and sports items are also available. Separate dressing rooms for men and women and toilet facilities are also available.
The Rock Fort in Namakkal is a special feature of the Town. The Fort covers an area of one and half acres of flat surface. It is accessible from the South-West by a flight of narrow steps. The Rock Fort is on the summit of the rock. Its remnants in brick and stone still bear the marks of the skirmishes by the Cholas in the 9th Century. These remnants endured the attempts to seize the fort. There are two rock–cut cave temples located on both sides of the hill dedicated to Narasimhaswamy and Ranganathasamy.
A Temple dedicated to the Goddess Namagiri Amman. It is situated within the temple complex of the Narasimha Swamy kovil. According to the legends, Namagiri Amman (or Namagiri Lakshmi) appeared in the Kamalalayam and performed penance which pleased Narasimha Swamy. The Amman is reputed for granting prayers for marriages and children. The temple is located facing the Narasimha Swamy Kovil and contains a holy waterspring known as the Narasimha Theertham. On the outside in the open is a colossal stone statue 18’high of Visvarupa Anjaneya, populary known as Hanumantharaya Swamy. The sculptural works of the temple exhibit influence of the Pallava and Chalukya art.

Valvil Ori vizha
Val Vil Ori Festival (vizha) is celebrated in a grand manner. It takes place in Kollihills during the month of August. The festival is held on the 17th and 18th of Adi in the Tamil Month every year.
In these festival, artists will carry out different types of Classical & Folk art forms. School students from the region will also join in these performances. School students from various parts will take part in archery competition held during Val Vil Ori Vizha.
