History and Geography of Nagapattinam

Nagapattinam is a district rooted in the legacy of the Cholamandalam. It was one of the most significant regions of the ancient Tamil Kingdoms. This area was once known as Cholakula Vallippatinam. It is named after the title Kshathiriya Sigamani of the great ruler Raja Raja Chola. Its cultural heritage is highlighted in Burmese historical texts dating back to the 3rd century B.C., where a Buddha Vihar built by Emperor Ashoka is mentioned. Even the Chinese traveler Hieun Tsang referred to the presence of this ancient Buddhist site in his writings.

The district was historically part of East Thanjavur. It is known as the Paddy Granary of South India. It was carved out from Thanjavur in 1991. Geographically, Nagapattinam lies along the coast. It is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east. It is also surrounded by the Palk Strait to the south. Velankanni

Velankanni is one of the most visited pilgrim centres in India. It is a town situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal.  Kodiakkarai is also called Point Calimere, is situated abutting the Palk Strait. Spread over an area of over 312.17 hectars, this Wild Life Sanctuary boasts of various mammals. These include blue buck, spotted deer, wild boar, semi wild ponies, and bonnet macaque. It is also home to water birds like flamingoes, ibises, herons, and spoonbills. Sea turtle, starred tortoise, vipers, marsh crocodiles, etc., are some of the reptiles. Fish, dolphins, dugong, sea lion, sea cow are occasionally found here. Besides, it is where the occurrence of varieties of corals are found.


Sikkal

A beautiful Muragan Temple dedicated to Lord Singaravelan is housed in a large complex. The pillars of this temple are adorned with intricate and exquisite carvings. The beautiful paintings of a bygone era are amazing in colour and portrayal. Beside this temple has the shrine of Siva, Vishnu and Hanuman. It is a rare combination, indeed.
