A Glimpse into the History of Mayiladuthurai

The district of Mayiladuthurai gets its name from an ancient legend. In this legend, Goddess Parvathi transformed into a peacock. She did this to captivate Lord Shiva with a divine dance. The town was known as “Mayurapuram” and “Mayavaram” until the 18th century. It received its current name through an ordinance by former Chief Minister Dr. M. G. Ramachandran in 1982.

Mayiladuthurai is surrounded by temples of great spiritual significance, including those dedicated to the nine planets, like Vaitheeswarankoil and Keezhaperumpallam. The region has been home to prominent learning centers. Dharmapuram Mutt and Thiruvaduthurai Mutt are particularly notable. They have greatly contributed to Tamil culture and literature.

Historically, Mayiladuthurai holds a place of honor in India’s independence movement. Mahatma Gandhi visited the district on three notable occasions. These occasions were in 1915, 1921, and 1927. His visits left an indelible mark on its legacy. His disciple, Thillaiyadi Valliammai, also hails from this region, and her contributions are commemorated with a memorial.

Thirumangai Azhwar – The Warrior Turned Saint

Thirumangai Azhwar, born in 2702 BC as Kaliyan in Thirukkuraiyalur near Thiruvali-Thirunagari in the Sirkali Taluk of Mayiladuthurai district. He was a military commander under the Chola King. He was later rewarded the governance of a region called Alli Nadu, where he earned the title Thirumangai Mannan.

Kaliyan fell deeply in love with Kumudhavalli, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. To win her heart, he had to meet two conditions:

  1. Convert to Vaishnavism.
  2. Commit to feeding a thousand people every day for a year.

Embracing Vaishnavism, Thirumangai Mannan’s devotion grew, and he took up the task of constructing the Sri Rangam temple walls. To fund this mission, he turned to robbery. During one such theft, he encountered Lord Vishnu disguised as a groom. Despite collecting all the valuables, he struggled to remove the groom’s toe ring and realized it was Lord Vishnu himself. Lord Narayana then revealed the sacred Ashtaakshara mantra, transforming the thief into the saint Thirumangai Azhwar.

Thirumangai Azhwar is the last of the 12 revered Azhwar Saints of Vaishnavism, known for his Periya Thirumozhi hymns.

Thirugnana Sambandar – The Prodigy Poet of Saivism

Thirugnana Sambandar was a child prodigy. He lived for only 16 years during the 6th and 7th centuries. He became one of the most celebrated Nayanmaars of Saivism. Born to Sivapaatha Hruthayar and Bhagavathi Ammayar, his divine journey began at the age of three. During a visit to the Sirkali temple, his father left him near the temple tank. The child cried, attracting the attention of Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma Devi. They appeared and fed him milk from a golden vessel. When asked by his father, the child responded by singing his first Thevaram hymn.

Blessed with a divine set of golden thaalam (cymbals), Thirugnana Sambandar traveled to various Shiva temples, singing Thevaram hymns. The Lord, moved by the child’s devotion, gifted him a pearl-studded palanquin and umbrella to shield his tender feet.

Thirugnana Sambandar performed many miracles. He cured the poisonous fever of devotees. He revived a man who died from a snake bite in Thirumarugal. He also transformed male Palmyrah trees into fruit-bearing female trees. In Madurai, he cured the stomach ailment of King Pandiyan Nedumaaran. He converted him back to Saivism after defeating Jain scholars in debates.

He collaborated with Appar (Thiru Navukkarasar) to alleviate famine. They prayed to Lord Shiva. He provided daily gold coins that the saints used to feed the people. Ultimately, Thirugnana Sambandar attained moksha at the feet of Lord Shiva.
